DGP Anurag Dhankar Death Probe Intensifies as Financial Transactions and Electronic Evidence Come Under Scrutiny

The investigation into the unnatural death of Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar has been intensified, with authorities examining his personal bank account and financial transactions as part of efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding his death. Chief Minister Professor Dr. Manik Saha informed the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Thursday that investigators are also collecting electronic evidence and examining all relevant aspects of the case.

Making a statement in the Assembly regarding the investigation, the Chief Minister said the financial transactions linked to the deceased DGP’s personal bank account were being scrutinised. The move forms part of the wider investigation into the circumstances that preceded and surrounded the senior police officer’s death.

Dr. Saha also told the House that the process of collecting electronic evidence was underway. Investigators are using technical methods and examining available digital and electronic material to establish a clearer sequence of events and determine whether there were any circumstances that may have contributed to the death.

According to the Chief Minister’s statement, DGP Anurag Dhankar reached his office at around 10:12 am on July 20. After receiving the ceremonial salute, he entered his chamber and informed officials that he intended to rest until around 11 am.

When the chamber remained closed beyond the expected time, DIGP Prabir Majumder reportedly became suspicious. The door was found bolted from inside, following which a carpenter from Police Headquarters was called and the chamber was opened by breaking the door.

Dhankar was found hanging inside his office chamber. He was immediately taken to Agartala Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at around 12:48 pm.

An unnatural death case was registered at West Agartala Police Station on the same day. The District Superintendent of Police was entrusted with supervision of the investigation, while the IGP (Law and Order) is directly overseeing the detailed inquiry.

The Chief Minister told the Assembly that the post-mortem examination report had recorded the recovery of a hanging body and the death. However, the investigation is continuing to examine the broader circumstances surrounding the incident rather than relying solely on the initial findings.

The decision to examine the DGP’s personal banking transactions and electronic evidence indicates that investigators are looking beyond the immediate circumstances of the death. Financial records, digital material and other available evidence are expected to be examined together to establish a comprehensive picture of events before the incident.

Dr. Saha urged legislators and others to exercise restraint and refrain from drawing conclusions while the investigation remains underway. He emphasised that the circumstances surrounding the death are being examined through a detailed inquiry and that conclusions should be reached only after the investigation establishes the facts.

The issue assumed significance in the Assembly as Opposition members were preparing to raise questions concerning the circumstances of the DGP’s death. Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia adjourned the proceedings for the day before the Opposition could raise the matter in detail. The Assembly is scheduled to reconvene on Friday.

With the investigation now focusing on financial transactions, electronic evidence and the sequence of events inside the police headquarters on July 20, attention is likely to remain centred on the findings of the ongoing inquiry. Authorities have not, however, indicated any final conclusion regarding the circumstances or motive behind the death, and the investigation remains in progress.
