Political Tensions Resurface in Tripura’s Ruling Alliance as Minister Animesh Debbarma Skipped Dinner Hosted by Party Supremo Pradyot, Joins CM’s Dinner

Fresh political speculation has emerged within Tripura’s ruling BJP–Tipra Motha alliance after Tipra Motha minister and MLA Animesh Debbarma reportedly skipped a dinner hosted by party supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma and instead attended a dinner organised by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha ahead of the upcoming Assembly session.

The development has triggered renewed discussion over the internal political equations within Tipra Motha and the relationship between the regional party and its BJP ally. The timing is significant, coming against the backdrop of preparations for the forthcoming Assembly session and negotiations over the upcoming village committee elections.

According to reports, Tipra Motha minister Animesh Debbarma and MLA Chitta Debbarma attended a pre-Assembly meeting and dinner hosted by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha at his official residence yesterday night. However, they were reportedly absent from a meeting and dinner organised by Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma.

The reported decision to attend the Chief Minister’s programme while staying away from the Tipra Motha supremo’s dinner has become a talking point.

The latest development comes at a time when both parties are preparing for the forthcoming village committee elections. Seat-sharing and electoral coordination between the two alliance partners are expected to be major issues in the coming days. Pradyot Kishore Debbarma has maintained a firm position that Tipra Motha will not enter into an electoral understanding with the BJP unless the party’s demands and conditions are accepted.

This has added pressure to the alliance negotiations, particularly because Tipra Motha has demonstrated considerable political strength in the tribal areas. The party’s performance in the recent TTAADC elections, where it secured 24 seats and subsequently formed the council administration, has strengthened its bargaining position ahead of the next round of local elections.

Pradyot Kishore Debbarma has also been raising issues concerning the functioning and powers of the TTAADC. He yesterday met Governor Indrasena Reddy and raised the issue of several bills passed by the Autonomous District Council that, according to his position, are still awaiting the Governor’s assent. The pending legislation has become another important issue in the relationship between Tipra Motha and the state government.

Against this backdrop, the contrasting political engagements of senior Tipra Motha leaders have generated questions about the degree of coordination between the party’s top leadership and its representatives in the state government.
