Youth Congress president Neel Kamal Saha sits in ‘Dharna’ before Melaghar police station, accuses police and minister Kishore Barman of inaction

The state Youth Congress president Neel Kamal Saha today staged a sit-in strike with other youth Congress activists before the Melaghar police station in protest against the police inaction in a crime and refusal to register FIR . He also accused minister for higher education Kishore Barman of Nalchhar of insensitivity in the case of electrocution of two persons in Laxmandhepa village in Nalchhar on August 22. While continuing his sit-in programme Neel Kamal Saha spoke to media persons and explained the reasons for his protest programme.

He said that on the morning of August 22 a farmer named Manik Mia in Laxmandhepa village had gone to work in his paddy field but while working in the field he got entangled in the coil of an illegal hookline set there by another villager Uttam Debnath. Having seen Manik Mia struggling to wriggle out of the electrical wires his friend and neighbour Mintu Debnath rushed to rescue Manik Mia but he himself also got entangled in the power-charged wires and both the friends died on the spot.

Neel Kamal said that he had led a delegation of youth congress workers to the residence of deceased Manik Mia and Mintu Debnath today and came to know that on the day of their deaths the family members of Manik Mia had gone to the Melaghar police station and tried to have a FIR registered but the police authority there did not respond and refused to register FIR and give a copy of it to the complainant. The minister for higher education Kishore Barman who represents Nalchhar assembly constituency in assembly had also advised the complainants to hush up the matter in stead of helping them register complaint with Melaghar police station.

Having come to know of all this Neel Kamal came back to Melaghar police station and insisted on FIR being filed against Uttam Debnath but since he did not get a positive response Neel Kamal , accompanied by his co-workers, launched a sit-in strike in front of the police station. After a few hours , however, the officer in charge of Melaghar police station Jayanta Das appeared in the police station and gave a receipt copy of the complaint filed against Uttam Debnath to Neel Kamal Saha. The OC also promised to give the case registration number of the complaint tomorrow. Neel Kamal and his associates then withdrew their sit-in programme and condemned in a conversation with media persons the earlier inaction of police and insensitive attempt of the minister for higher education Kishore Barman in advising the complainants to hush up the case. He also threatened to relaunch an agitation unless the police take appropriate action by nabbing guilty Uttam Debnath.
