Tripura Assembly to Take Up Electricity Bills, Teacher Shortage and PRTC Issues, Statement by CM on death of the State’s former DGP

The Tripura Legislative Assembly is set for an important sitting on Thursday, August 27, with a wide-ranging agenda covering public grievances, legislative reforms, government reports and several issues of immediate public importance.
According to the official List of Business issued by the Tripura Legislative Assembly Secretariat, the sitting will begin at 11:00 AM on August 27, 2026. The agenda includes starred and unstarred questions, obituary references, reports of the Business Advisory Committee and a statement by the Chief Minister on the death of the State’s former Director General of Police.
One of the most significant portions of the sitting will be the Statement to be made by the Chief Minister under Rule 361. The Chief Minister, who is also in charge of the Home Department, is scheduled to make a statement on the “unfortunate demise of the late Director General of Police of the State.” The matter has been formally listed as one of public importance.
The Assembly will also take up a substantial number of questions raised by members. The list includes starred questions from legislators including Ranjit Das, Jitendra Majumder, Mailafru Mog, Jitendra Chakraborti, Tafazzal Hossain, Swapna Das Paul, Gopal Chandra Roy, Dipankar Sen, Biswajit Kalai, Kalyani Saha Roy, PK Reang, Sanjoy Manik Tripura, Pathan Lal Jamatia, Ranjit Deb Barma, Sailendra Chandra Nath, Sudip Roy Barman, Bindu Debnath, Birajit Sinha and Manab Deb Barma, among others. The unstarred section also contains questions from several members on departmental and public-interest matters.
The sitting will further include the presentation and adoption of the report of the Business Advisory Committee, followed by the laying of several important documents before the House.
Under the Finance Department, the government is scheduled to place notifications issued under the Tripura State Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, covering the period from February 22, 2026 to July 31, 2026. The Industries and Commerce Department will place a statement explaining the circumstances that necessitated the immediate promulgation of the Tripura Ease of Doing Business Ordinance, 2026.
The Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department will lay the Tripura Legal Metrology (Enforcement) (3rd Amendment) Rules, 2026, while the Forest Department will place the annual reports of the Tripura Forest Development and Plantation Corporation for the years 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23.
The legislative business is expected to be another major focus of the sitting, with three Bills scheduled for introduction.
The Finance Minister is to seek leave to introduce the Tripura State Goods and Services Tax (Tenth Amendment) Bill, 2026, identified as The Tripura Bill No. 12 of 2026.
The Chief Minister is scheduled to seek leave to introduce the Tripura Land Revenue and Land Reforms (Fourteenth Amendment) Bill, 2026, or The Tripura Bill No. 13 of 2026.
Another significant proposed legislation is the Board of Open Schooling & Examination, Tripura Bill, 2026, listed as The Tripura Bill No. 14 of 2026, which will also be introduced by the Chief Minister.
The Assembly will also receive the report of the Select Committee on the Tripura Ease of Doing Business Bill, 2026, or The Tripura Bill No. 10 of 2026. The Chairman of the Select Committee is scheduled to present the committee's report before the House.
Electricity Bills, Teacher Vacancies and PRTC to Dominate Short-Duration Discussions. The final section of the day's business could attract considerable public attention as three issues have been selected for discussion on matters of urgent public importance for short duration.
Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman is scheduled to raise the issue of what the agenda describes as the growing dissatisfaction and anger among electricity consumers in Tripura over the illogical and sudden increase in their electricity bills. The discussion is likely to provide an opportunity to examine concerns surrounding electricity billing and the impact of sudden bill increases on consumers.
Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury will raise the issue of the shortage of teachers in schools across Tripura. With teacher availability directly affecting classroom functioning and education delivery, the matter is expected to receive attention during the short-duration discussion.
Meanwhile, MLA Ranjit Deb Barma will discuss the issue of the Permanent Resident of Tripura Certificate (PRTC) in the interest of the people of Tripura. The inclusion of the issue in the urgent public importance section indicates that questions surrounding the PRTC and its implications for the state's residents will come up for discussion.
