IIT–Tripura University Linkages Gain Momentum as 80 Students Shortlisted for NPTEL Winter Internship 2026

The academic linkage between the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) system and Tripura University is gaining further momentum, with as many as 80 students of Tripura University’s NPTEL Local Chapter (LC 1064) shortlisted for the NPTEL Winter Internship 2026. The selection was based on students’ performance in NPTEL courses during the January–May 2026 session.

The development is being viewed as a constructive step towards expanding access to high-quality online learning, research exposure and industry-oriented skill development for students from Tripura. NPTEL, an initiative of IITs and IISc, has created an important platform through which students of universities across the country can access courses designed and delivered by leading academic institutions.

The shortlisted Tripura University students have achieved NPTEL STAR, Topper, Elite and Elite+Silver distinctions, indicating strong performance in their respective courses. The achievement also reflects the potential of the university’s NPTEL Local Chapter to encourage students to participate in nationally recognised academic programmes.

Among the shortlisted candidates is Kiran Bhowmik, who has been recognised in the Elite and Elite+Silver categories. Bhowmik is from the Department of Economics, Tripura University, and is presently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at SRM University in Chennai. His recognition adds an academic dimension to the achievement, demonstrating how NPTEL-based learning can contribute to continuous professional development beyond university education.

The NPTEL Winter Internship will provide selected students opportunities to undertake practical and academic work under course instructors. Depending on the nature of the internship, the programme may extend for 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 weeks. Stipends range from Rs. 7,500 for two weeks to Rs. 45,000 for twelve weeks. NPTEL will also make efforts to facilitate hostel accommodation at the respective host institutes, subject to availability and institutional guidelines.

The large number of shortlisted students presents an opportunity for Tripura University to further strengthen its academic engagement with IIT-led programmes. Greater participation in NPTEL courses, internships, research projects and faculty-led initiatives could help students from Tripura gain wider exposure to national academic networks. The achievement therefore goes beyond individual certification. It points towards the value of strengthening the IIT–Tripura University academic connection and creating more structured pathways for students to access advanced learning, research and professional opportunities.
