Jogendranagar CPI(M) Office Vandalised Amid Allegations and Counter-Allegations

A political confrontation in the Jogendranagar area of Agartala has triggered allegations and counter-allegations between the ruling BJP and the opposition CPI(M), after a BJP rally linked to the ongoing electricity-bill issue was followed by an alleged attack and vandalism at the CPI(M)’s local area committee office.

According to local reports, a BJP procession was organised from Vidyasagar Bazar on Monday evening in support of the government’s recent decision relating to electricity bills. The rally reportedly passed through the Jogendranagar area before tensions escalated near the CPI(M) office.

The CPI(M) has alleged that BJP supporters involved in the procession attacked its party office and vandalised property inside and outside the premises. According to the allegations, tables, chairs and other office materials were damaged, while a motorcycle and a scooter parked in front of the office were also allegedly vandalised.

The BJP side, however, has made a counter-allegation regarding the circumstances that preceded the vandalism. According to the reports, BJP supporters alleged that pieces of tin were thrown at participants of the rally from the direction of the CPI(M) office while the procession was passing through the area. Several people were reportedly injured in the ensuing incident, with two persons, identified as Uttam Sutradhar and Bhanumalik Barua, receiving treatment at IGM Hospital.

The BJP has reportedly claimed that the alleged attack on its procession provoked the subsequent confrontation. BJP supporters also accused their political opponents of attempting to create tension during a rally organised in connection with the government’s decision on electricity bills.

The CPI(M), on the other hand, has rejected the allegations against its supporters and maintained that its party office was targeted during the political mobilisation. The Left party has reportedly accused BJP-backed supporters and sections of ruling-party supporters from the surrounding areas of leading the attack.
