Auto entry curbs trigger protests, unions seek withdrawal

Transport workers’ organisations held separate protests in Agartala on Monday against restrictions on the entry of auto-rickshaws from outside the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) area, saying the move could affect drivers’ livelihoods.

The protests were organised by the CITU-affiliated All India Transport Workers’ Federation, E-rickshaw Sramik Sangha and the Mazdoor Monitoring Cell-affiliated E-rickshaw Sramik Samiti.

According to a Traffic Department official, the restriction was introduced jointly by the AMC, Transport Department and Tripura Police Traffic Unit to address congestion caused by the increasing number of three-wheelers.

The restriction applies to both battery-operated and CNG-powered autos. Vehicles entering from the southern side have been directed to drop passengers at Nagerjala, those approaching from the airport side must return from Radhanagar, while autos coming from the Jirania side cannot proceed beyond Chandrapur, the official said.

CITU leader Amal Chakraborty said transport unions did not oppose measures to address traffic problems but maintained that drivers’ livelihoods should be protected. He also called for consultation with transport unions before implementing such measures.

The All India Transport Workers’ Federation submitted a deputation to the Joint Transport Commissioner, while the E-rickshaw Sramik Sangha submitted an 11-point charter of demands to the District Magistrate and Collector, West Tripura.

The Mazdoor Monitoring Cell-affiliated union also held a sit-in at City Centre.

Officials said exemptions had been provided for certain emergencies.
