Pradyot hints at possible defections from Tipra Motha

Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman on Sunday hinted at a major political decision that could lead to defections from the party, saying some MLAs and MDCs may quit if his future decision is not accepted.

“There is a strong possibility that my future decision will not be accepted by all in my party. Some MLAs and MDCs may quit as well,” Debbarman said during a social media livestream.

He said the party might have to “part away” if its demands for the Tiprasa community were not met, adding that some issues were beyond politics and directly linked to the community’s survival.

Debbarman urged Prime Minister and Union Home Minister to consider the demands of Tipra Motha, particularly protection of land belonging to the Tiprasa community.

“We share a border with Bangladesh. The land belonging to the Tiprasa community needs protection,” he said, adding that he believed the government would provide such protection.

Debbarman also referred to land rights enjoyed by other Sixth Schedule areas in the Northeast and said Tipra Motha was seeking equal treatment.

“The Karbis, the Dimasas, the people of Mizoram, Nagaland and other North Eastern states already have the land rights. We are asking for equal treatment,” he said.
