Tripura’s education sector has received a major national recognition with Ranjan Debnath, Assistant Headmaster of PM SHRI Sabroom Girls’ Higher Secondary School in Sabroom, South Tripura, being selected for the National Teachers’ Award 2026. His selection is being seen as a significant recognition of his contribution to school development, student well-being, innovative educational practices and school leadership.
Debnath has been selected among 48 teachers from across the country for the prestigious National Teachers’ Award 2026. The state-wise list identifies him as the Tripura awardee from PM SHRI Sabroom Girls HS School.
The award is particularly significant for South Tripura, as it brings national attention to the work being undertaken in a school located outside the state capital. The recognition highlights how committed teachers and school leaders in rural and semi-urban areas can contribute to improving the quality of education, creating supportive learning environments and encouraging students to participate actively in school life.
According to the information available about Debnath’s work, his contribution extends beyond conventional classroom teaching. His initiatives have focused on school development, student welfare, experiential learning, innovative classroom practices and the development of leadership qualities among students.
One of the initiatives associated with PM SHRI Sabroom Girls’ Higher Secondary School was the introduction of a U-shaped classroom seating arrangement, aimed at eliminating the traditional distinction between frontbenchers and backbenchers. The arrangement was designed to give students greater visibility, encourage interaction with teachers and create a more inclusive classroom environment.
Debnath’s involvement has also extended to programmes encouraging students to develop a scientific outlook and broader social and environmental awareness. Earlier this year, he presided over a National Science Day programme organised at PM SHRI Sabroom Girls’ HS School in association with Michael Madhusudan Dutta College, Sabroom.
His role in promoting student participation and leadership is also reflected in initiatives such as Bal Sansad, through which students are encouraged to take part in school governance and leadership-related activities.
