The Cuban ambassador to India Juan Carlos Aguleiro reiterated his socialist country’s resolve to keep the flag of revolutionary legacy of the country aflutter as well as to live up to the ideals of late president and revolutionary leader Fidel Castro. “We have faced and continue to face many harships but we have never bowed our heads and never deviated from the goal set for our country by our late leader Fidel Castro” said Aguleiro. He was speaking in a reception accorded to himself as well as the first secretary in the Cuban embassy in Delhi, Ms Mike Diaj Perej by the Tripura based Cuba solidarity association in Rabindra Shata Varshiki Bhawan yesterday. The duo had arrived here to a rousing reception on last Thursday. The Cuban ambassador’s speech was interpreted for the packed audience by senior journalist Rahul Sinha of ‘Daily Desher Katha’.
In hjs speech Aguleiro said that the predicament of Cuba, a small island nation, only 90 KMs away from the US coast , was whether they would achieve independence from Spanish or US rule . “It was in the year 1898 that Cuba’s thirty year struggle against Spanish imperialist and oppressive rule had ended with victory but then it was the turn of the US imperialist occupants to carry out their misrule and oppression ; the governments that had been installed by the US imperialist forces continued to work to protect the interests of the US imperialists who had converted Cuba into a colony” said Ambassador Juan Carlos Aguleiro. He said that in the year 1926 Fidel Castro had been born in a poor family resident in a corner of poor and backward Cuba. Fidel had completed his education and contested the presidential election in 1952 but the government of Batista , an agent of US imperialists ensured his defeat. But Fidel carried on his relentless fight against imperialist forces and their agents and finally achieved victory in 1959 but since then successive US governments have continued their efforts to destabilize Cuba. “We had also set a record by sending more than 3 lakh volunteers to fight for the oppressed and exploited people in South Africa and other parts of the continent for emancipation of people , Agleiro added. He also conveyed his personal and his government’s gratitude and thanks to the people and left forces of Tripura for inviting them.
The jam-packed auditorium listened intently as the Cuban ambassador spoke and there was a loud applause that greeted his speech.Aguleiro also expressed his appreciation of the cultural programme and the photo exhibition held in his honour. The programme yesterday was attended and addressed initially by the CPI (M) state secretary and politburo member Jiten Chowdhury.
