Jirania Law College, Mohanpur, West Tripura, has issued a detailed rejoinder challenging recent media reports concerning alleged examination malpractice, harassment of students and an FIR involving a senior student of the institution. The college has denied the allegations against its faculty and staff and maintained that the reports presented a one-sided account without reflecting the institution’s version.

In its press release-cum-right to reply issued on Friday, the college stated that it is affiliated to Tripura University and the Bar Council of India and is managed under the PPP mode by Anandanagar Welfare Society, Howrah. The institution said it was placing its version on record in the interest of fair and balanced reporting.

According to the college, complaints of alleged examination malpractice against student Biswanath Bhattacharya, an LLB second-semester student, were made before the FIR and allegations of harassment referred to in the recent reports. The college said Bhattacharya was allegedly found using unauthorised material or a mobile phone inside the examination hall on two separate occasions during the ongoing LLB second-semester examinations.

The first alleged incident reportedly occurred on August 17, 2026, during the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam paper (LLB205A), at around noon. The college said it subsequently informed the Vice-Chancellor and Controller of Examinations of Tripura University through its letter bearing Ref. No. 331/JLC/2026, enclosing supporting evidence.

The second alleged malpractice incident, according to the college, occurred on August 18, during the Legal Writing and Research Methodology paper (LLB206), at approximately 11.50 am. The institution said the matter was again reported to the Vice-Chancellor and Controller of Examinations through its letter bearing Ref. No. 332/JLC/2026, along with evidence.

The college argued that the chronology was important, claiming that the malpractice complaints had already been initiated before the subsequent allegations of harassment and the FIR referred to in the news reports.

The institution also referred to a separate incident allegedly involving another student, Madhuchhanda Saha, on August 13. According to the college, Saha allegedly used abusive and threatening language against the College Librarian and a Guest Faculty member, physically pushed or caused injury to them and allegedly issued threats against the Director inside the college premises.

The college said the incident was reported by the Librarian to the Officer-in-Charge of Ranirbazar Police Station and that a complaint was registered under Sections 115, 352 and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The Principal also reportedly brought the matter to the notice of the Vice-Chancellor of Tripura University through a letter dated August 14.

The college further claimed that the incident was corroborated in writing by more than 50 students who were allegedly present at the time, besides the two faculty members concerned.

According to the rejoinder, Saha was also subsequently reported for alleged examination malpractice on August 17 and 18. The college said complaints concerning alleged unauthorised use of material or mobile phones during the examinations were submitted to the university authorities on both occasions.

The institution has categorically denied allegations that students, including Bhattacharya, were subjected to harassment, insult or denial of medical assistance by college faculty or staff. It said the health and safety of all students, including senior citizens pursuing legal education, remained a priority and that assistance was provided whenever required.
