In a significant development, officials of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), accompanied by personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces, conducted searches at multiple premises linked to businessman Shahjahan Mia in Agartala on Wednesday, amid allegations of suspicious financial transactions and possible links to an international cross-border network.
According to information available from local sources, the ED team carried out simultaneous searches at Shahjahan Mia’s residence in the Akhaura Road area, near a local club complex, and at his business establishment in the Battala Fitting Market area. The operation was reportedly conducted without prior information being shared with the local police, leading to considerable interest among residents and the business community.
Sources said the searches were part of an investigation into allegations involving illegal financial transactions, unexplained sources of funds, foreign financial dealings and suspected activities connected with networks operating in areas close to the international border.
The alleged financial and cross-border links have attracted particular attention because of the strategic location of Agartala and its proximity to the India-Bangladesh international border. Investigators are understood to be examining whether financial transactions associated with the individual and his business interests have any connection with wider cross-border activities.
The ED operation has also raised questions about the functioning of local enforcement agencies. According to allegations circulating locally, suspicious activities had allegedly continued for a considerable period despite the concerned premises being located in a prominent commercial and residential area. Questions have consequently been raised over whether local authorities had adequate information about the alleged activities and, if so, what action had previously been taken.
Sources further claimed that the investigating agency had been keeping a close watch on the activities of the person concerned for some time before carrying out Wednesday’s searches. The presence of central security personnel during the operation underscored the seriousness with which the agency appeared to be treating the investigation.
During the operation, ED officials reportedly questioned Shahjahan Mia and examined documents and other materials available at the residential and commercial premises. However, there has been no official confirmation so far regarding the seizure of cash, documents, electronic devices or other incriminating materials.
Shahjahan Mia, according to local reports, has expressed ignorance about the exact purpose of the ED operation and has reportedly claimed that nothing significant was recovered from his residence or business establishment.
The allegations surrounding the businessman include suspected illegal money transactions, possible foreign financial dealings and alleged links with networks involved in cross-border activities.
