In a major humanitarian initiative aimed at providing relief to families accompanying patients at the Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital, the Tripura Government has established a modern Bharat Mata Canteen-cum-Night Shelter House at a cost of Rs. 4.99 crore.
Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha formally inaugurated the new facility on Wednesday in the presence of Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, IAS Municipal Commissioner Shri Saju Vaheed A, IAS and other dignitaries.
The facility has been designed with a particular focus on the comfort, convenience and safety of relatives and attendants who often have to stay at the hospital for extended periods while caring for critically ill or admitted family members.
Inaugurating the facility, Chief Minister Manik Saha said that under the new arrangement, people accompanying patients at GBP Hospital will be able to access meals for just Rs. 10 and night-stay facilities for Rs. 20. The initiative is expected to provide significant financial relief to families, particularly those coming from distant parts of Tripura and neighbouring areas for medical treatment.
The Chief Minister also stressed that the safety and security of the patients' attendants would receive due importance under the new facility. The availability of an affordable shelter is expected to reduce the difficulties faced by families who otherwise have to spend considerable amounts on food and accommodation during prolonged hospital stays.
The Bharat Mata Canteen-cum-Night Shelter House is being projected as a welfare-oriented facility that combines affordable food services with basic accommodation, thereby addressing two of the most immediate challenges faced by patient attendants, access to reasonably priced meals and a safe place to stay at night.
At the inauguration programme, Chief Minister Saha also called upon local public representatives and all concerned stakeholders to ensure the proper operation, maintenance and upkeep of the facility. He emphasised that the success of the initiative would depend not only on its establishment but also on ensuring that the services remain accessible, clean, safe and functional for those who need them.
The new facility is expected to become an important support system for thousands of patients' relatives visiting GBP Hospital every year. By making food available at a nominal price and providing low-cost overnight accommodation, the government initiative seeks to bring greater dignity, security and convenience to families during some of the most difficult periods of their lives.
