Doctor Appeals to Tripura CM for Parents Safety, Police Register Cross-Cases After Alleged Clash in Sabroom

A family dispute in Kalachara under Manubazar police station in South Tripura has taken a serious turn after Dr Parmita Sen, a doctor currently undertaking her internship at a hospital in Kolkata, publicly appealed to Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr Manik Saha for the safety and security of her parents and brother following an alleged violent incident at their residence.
In a Facebook post published on Saturday, Dr Sen expressed concern over the safety of her father, Mrinal Sen, mother, Gita Majumder Sen, and brother, Tanmoy Sen. She alleged that a group of people attacked her family at their residence at around 8 pm on August 15 and made serious allegations concerning physical assault, threats and alleged sexual misconduct involving her mother.
Dr Sen also alleged that the incident was connected with a dispute over the family’s residential property and claimed that attempts were being made to take possession of the property. She further alleged that the family’s political association with the CPI(M) had also contributed to the situation.
Following Dr Sen’s appeal, Chief Minister Prof. Dr Manik Saha stated that he had instructed the police to take necessary action against those responsible in accordance with law.
The police, however, have now registered two separate cases arising from the same incident, with allegations and counter-allegations made by the two sides.
According to police case information, Manubazar PS Case No. 2026/MNB/017, registered on August 16 under Sections 117(2), 351(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), was filed on the complaint of Biswajit Debnath, 45, of Kalachara.
The complaint names Mrinal Sen, Tanmoy Sen and Gita Sen as accused.
According to the police version recorded in the case, the dispute began after a banana tree belonging to the Sen family allegedly fell across the entrance road to the complainant’s house. The complainant allegedly cut down the tree without informing the Sen family, following which an argument reportedly took place.
The complaint alleges that later, at around 8 pm, Biswajit Debnath went to question the Sen family regarding alleged abusive language and was allegedly assaulted with a lathi, resulting in a bleeding head injury. It further alleges that when his relatives came to his assistance, Gita Sen allegedly assaulted one of them with a lathi.
The complainant and other injured persons were subsequently taken to Kalachara Primary Health Centre for treatment, according to the police case details.
A counter-case, Manubazar PS Case No. 2026/MNB/016, was also registered on August 16 under Sections 329(3), 324(2), 115(2), 74, 351(2) and 3(5) of the BNS.
The complainant in this case is Gita Majumder Sen, wife of Mrinal Sen. She named Biswajit Debnath, Abhijit Debnath and Uttam Dey as accused.
According to the complaint, a banana tree near the Sen family’s house had fallen and Gita Sen had informed the other side about the matter, requesting that the tree be removed after her husband returned home.
The complaint alleges that at around 830 pm, the accused persons entered the house, allegedly abused and threatened the family and subsequently attacked Gita Sen. It further alleges that she was grabbed by the throat, pulled by her hair, thrown to the ground and physically assaulted. The complaint also contains an allegation of outraging her modesty.
The complaint further alleges that when Mrinal Sen came out to protect his wife, he too was assaulted.
Gita Sen subsequently received medical treatment at Kalachara PHC, according to the police case information.
The registration of the two cases has given the incident a different complexion from the initial allegations made publicly by Dr Parmita Sen.
While Dr Sen had appealed for immediate protection for her family and action against those allegedly responsible for the attack, the police have registered cases from both sides, with each side accusing the other of assault and related offences.
Police sources indicated that, given the existence of cross-cases and allegations requiring investigation, there was no immediate scope for making arrests solely on the basis of the allegations. Notices have reportedly been issued to both sides as part of the legal process.
The police have begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the sequence of events, the injuries allegedly sustained by the parties and the specific allegations contained in both complaints.
Meanwhile, former MLA Prabat Chowdhury and Tripura Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury visited the residence of the Sen family and met the alleged victims.
The opposition leaders expressed concern over the incident and demanded appropriate legal action based on the facts established through investigation. The visit has also brought a political dimension to the dispute, particularly as the Sen family has alleged that their political association with the CPI(M) was among the factors behind the alleged targeting.
The CPI(M) leadership has called for the family’s security and a fair and impartial investigation into all the allegations.
Despite the Chief Minister’s direction to the police to take necessary action in accordance with law, no arrest had been publicly reported as of Sunday evening.
