A clash reportedly broke out at Churaibari Class XII School over the collection of membership for the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), leaving at least six students injured. Two students associated with the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the CPI(M), and four students reportedly associated with ABVP were injured in the confrontation.
One of the injured students was reportedly in a serious condition and was subsequently admitted to GBP Hospital in Agartala for treatment.
According to allegations raised by SFI, the incident was linked to an attempt by ABVP supporters to collect membership from students on the school premises. SFI has alleged that some of the ABVP-affiliated students who arrived at the school for the confrontation were not students of the institution.
SFI further alleged that a group had visited the school several days earlier and attempted to collect money from students in the name of membership or organisational activities. According to the allegations, several students had refused to provide money, and SFI claims that some of those students were subsequently targeted during the latest incident.
However, these allegations remain claims made by SFI and would require verification by the school authorities and police. The circumstances leading to the clash, including who initiated the violence and whether outsiders entered the school premises, are yet to be independently established.
The incident has once again raised concerns over political activities and organisational membership drives being conducted among students on educational campuses. Questions are also being raised about the presence of political groups and their supporters around schools and whether adequate measures were taken by the authorities to prevent the situation from escalating.
ABVP, meanwhile, has reportedly demanded the arrest of those allegedly involved in the clash from the SFI side within 48 hours. The organisation has warned of launching an agitation if arrests are not made within the stipulated period.
The incident has created tension in the Churaibari area, with the clash between supporters of two politically opposed student organisations adding to concerns over the growing politicisation of student spaces.
Police and school authorities are expected to investigate the incident, identify those responsible for the violence and determine whether any individuals who are not students of the institution were involved.
The developments have also triggered sharp political reactions on social media, with supporters of both SFI and ABVP blaming the other side for the confrontation. Amid the competing allegations, the immediate priority remains ensuring the safety of students and preventing further escalation on and around the school campus.
