Tripura Sets Sights on Building a Unicorn, While Entrepreneurs Seek Stronger Support for Existing IT Companies

Tripura is taking an ambitious step towards strengthening its startup and innovation ecosystem with a full-day workshop on 'Building a Unicorn in Tripura' and the launch of the T-RISE, Tripura Registry & Integration for Startup Ecosystem portal on August 17.
The programme, being organised by the Directorate of Information Technology (DIT), Government of Tripura, in collaboration with T-Hub, Hyderabad, will be held at Hall No. 1 of Pragya Bhawan, Agartala, from 11 AM.
The proposed workshop is being viewed as an important opportunity to give a fresh push to entrepreneurship, innovation and technology-based businesses in Tripura. Its central theme, 'Building a Unicorn in Tripura,' reflects the state’s ambition to create startups capable of achieving extraordinary growth and competing in national and international markets.
A unicorn is generally understood as a privately held startup with a valuation of at least 100 crore. While reaching such a level is a challenging and long-term objective, entrepreneurs believe that the discussion itself can help create a more ambitious mindset among young innovators and technology entrepreneurs in the state.
The focus is expected to go beyond simply encouraging people to launch startups. An important part of the broader conversation will be how innovative ideas can be converted into commercially viable products and services, how businesses can identify genuine market opportunities, build strong teams, adopt technology and develop sustainable business models.
At the same time, local entrepreneurs believe that the state's startup strategy can become even more effective if it supports companies at every stage of their journey, including existing IT companies that have already established businesses in Tripura.
According to members of the local entrepreneurial community, some existing IT companies are facing significant business and operational challenges. They believe that alongside creating new startups, there is an opportunity for the government to examine how established companies can be supported so that their experience, skilled manpower, infrastructure and business networks remain valuable assets for Tripura's technology ecosystem.
The issue, entrepreneurs emphasise, is not about questioning the government's vision of creating a unicorn. Rather, they see the proposed workshop as an opportunity to develop a more comprehensive startup and IT ecosystem, where new entrepreneurs receive encouragement while existing companies also receive opportunities to overcome difficulties and expand.
Such support could potentially include better access to markets, institutional finance, government technology projects, mentoring, skilled manpower, incubation facilities and connections with national and international business networks.
