A disturbing incident involving an on-duty Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawan in the GB Bazaar area has triggered serious concerns over the safety of security personnel and the prevailing law-and-order situation in Tripura.

According to allegations circulating in connection with the incident, a group of unruly youths allegedly surrounded a TSR jawan while he was performing his duty in the GB Bazaar area. The jawan was reportedly subjected to physical harassment and intimidation. The incident was allegedly captured on camera, with visuals subsequently drawing public attention and raising questions about the circumstances under which a security personnel could be confronted and allegedly manhandled while on duty.

The incident has also sparked a wider debate over whether the fear and respect traditionally associated with the police and TSR personnel are gradually declining in the state.

For years, police and security forces have been regarded as symbols of discipline, authority and public protection. However, critics argue that a combination of alleged indiscipline, political interference, weakening administrative control and shortcomings in policing has contributed to a situation where sections of society increasingly appear willing to challenge law-enforcement personnel.

The latest incident has therefore raised a fundamental question that if those responsible for protecting ordinary citizens are themselves allegedly unable to remain safe while performing their duties, then who will protect them?

The allegation of an on-duty TSR jawan being surrounded and allegedly physically harassed is particularly serious because any such incident, if established, could undermine the authority of the security forces and encourage similar behaviour in the future.

At the same time, the allegations should be investigated objectively and promptly. The identities and roles of all persons involved need to be established through the available video footage, eyewitness accounts and other evidence. If the allegations are substantiated, appropriate legal action should follow without political or other considerations.

The incident has also prompted demands for the authorities to ensure that security personnel are not left vulnerable while deployed for public safety. Maintaining discipline among security forces is essential, but ensuring respect for lawful authority and protecting personnel from assault or intimidation is equally important.
