Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha Urges Journalists to Reject Groupism and Political Partisanship

Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha has called upon journalists to maintain unity within the media fraternity, reject groupism and avoid becoming partisan supporters of any political party or leader.

Speaking at a programme organised at the Agartala Press Club on Saturday on the occasion of the inauguration of the Press Club’s newly installed lift, the Chief Minister said journalism is a profession that enjoys the trust and respect of society. He cautioned that the reputation of the entire profession should not be damaged because of matters involving the personal interests of a few individuals.

According to Dr. Saha, unity among journalists would not only strengthen the media fraternity but also make it easier for the government and administration to address issues concerning journalists.

The Chief Minister described the BJP-led Tripura government as journalist-friendly and said the government was sincere about resolving the problems faced by members of the media fraternity. He noted that some issues had already been resolved, while efforts were continuing to address others.

Dr. Saha further suggested that journalists should come together and present unified and practical solutions to their common problems. Such an approach, he said, would help the government and administration take decisions more quickly and effectively.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of accuracy and responsibility in news reporting. He said news reports published by media organisations in Tripura are monitored and that clarifications are issued in cases where information is found to be incorrect.

Against this backdrop, he urged media organisations and journalists to ensure that only truthful and verified information is published.

Dr. Saha also made a strong appeal to journalists not to become followers or partisan supporters of any particular political party or political leader. He said excessive political bias in journalism could ultimately deprive ordinary citizens of access to genuine and credible information.

The Chief Minister's remarks placed emphasis on the need for journalists to preserve the credibility, independence and public trust associated with the profession while maintaining constructive engagement with the government.

Besides Manik Saha, the programme was attended by Information and Cultural Affairs Department Secretary Kiran Gitte, IAS, Director Bimbisar Bhattacharjee, IAS and members of the Agartala Press Club.

The inauguration of the lift marks an addition to the facilities of the Press Club, while the Chief Minister's address focused largely on the broader responsibilities of the media fraternity, the need for unity among journalists and the importance of maintaining professional credibility and accuracy in news reporting.
