Tripura University on Thursday reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards ragging, organising an awareness march, a speech competition and an awareness meeting on the campus as part of the National Anti-Ragging Day and Week observances.
The programme, organised by the university’s Anti-Ragging Committee under the direction of Vice-Chancellor and committee chairman Prof. Debabrata Das, saw the participation of students, teachers and administrative officials.
Students took part in the morning march carrying anti-ragging posters and banners. The campaign sought to promote a campus environment based on mutual respect, dignity and empathy, besides stressing the need for a ragging-free educational environment.
Addressing the main programme at the conference hall of the Central Library, Acting Registrar Prof. Samir Kumar Seal said the university would not compromise on cases of ragging.
“Tripura University is a ragging-free campus. Our policy against ragging is zero tolerance,” he said.
The university said preventive measures had been strengthened across departments and hostels to ensure a safe and dignified learning environment. An Anti-Ragging Squad was also reconstituted through a notification issued on August 4.
Dr. Shailesh Kumar Srivastava, convenor of the Anti-Ragging Committee and nodal officer, said surveillance and awareness measures had been strengthened across the campus. Recent notifications relating to the Anti-Ragging Committee and squad have also been made available on the university website.
As part of the awareness drive, 44 students from different departments participated in a speech competition. More than 100 students attended the programme, with the top six participants receiving medals and certificates.
The principal speaker, Swami Amartyanandaji Maharaj, secretary of the Dholeswar Ramakrishna Mission in Agartala, spoke on “Towards Dignity & Wellness: Building a Ragging-Free and Nasha Mukta Campus Community”. He stressed the importance of empathy, integrity and healthy living, and urged students to play a responsible role in creating a campus free from both ragging and substance abuse.
The prizes were presented by Swami Amartyanandaji Maharaj. Prof. Prashanta Kumar Das, convenor of the Anti-Ragging Squad, proposed the vote of thanks, while Dr. Joy Saha, a member of the Anti-Ragging Committee, conducted the programme.
