27 Security Workers Begin Indefinite Protest at North Tripura District Hospital Over 11 Months’ Unpaid Wages

Serious concerns have emerged over the prolonged non-payment of wages to security personnel deployed at the North Tripura District Hospital in Dharmanagar, with 27 security workers launching an indefinite sit-in protest on Wednesday demanding clearance of their salary arrears.

The security personnel alleged that their wages have remained unpaid for nearly 11 months. They staged the protest in front of the office of the Medical Superintendent of Dharmanagar District Hospital, demanding immediate payment of their outstanding salaries.

According to the protesting workers, they have been performing security duties at the district hospital for a long period through an outside agency reportedly contracted for providing security services. They alleged that despite regularly discharging their responsibilities, their salaries have not been paid for around 11 months, leaving them and their families in severe financial distress.

The workers said the prolonged delay in receiving wages has made it increasingly difficult for them to meet their daily household expenses. Several of them reportedly have children and other family members dependent on their regular income, while the continued withholding of salaries has pushed their families into serious economic uncertainty.

One of the protesting security workers said that they had repeatedly raised the issue of their unpaid wages, but no effective initiative had been taken to resolve the matter. According to them, the workers were compelled to launch the indefinite protest after waiting for a long period for their legitimate dues.

The workers further alleged that although the issue of their pending salaries had been brought to the attention of the concerned government authorities, no concrete steps had yet been taken to ensure payment of the arrears. They have now demanded that the competent government authorities intervene immediately and arrange for the release of all outstanding wages.

The protest has also raised questions over the role of the outside agency responsible for providing security services at the hospital and the monitoring mechanism of the concerned authorities. The workers questioned how security personnel could be deployed continuously at an important government hospital while their wages allegedly remained unpaid for such a prolonged period.

The situation is particularly significant because the North Tripura District Hospital is an important healthcare institution catering to patients from Dharmanagar and surrounding areas. Security personnel play a crucial role in maintaining order and ensuring the safety of patients, doctors, nurses, visitors and hospital property.

Apart from the hardship faced by the workers and their families, the prolonged protest could also have an impact on the security arrangements at the hospital. The protesting employees have made it clear that they intend to continue their agitation until a concrete assurance is given regarding payment of their long-pending salaries.

The incident has therefore put the spotlight on the administrative and contractual arrangements governing outsourced security services in government hospitals.
