Historic Commonwealth Gold Medallist Asmita Dey to Return Home, Tripura Government Plans Land Gift in Agartala

Tripura is preparing to welcome home judoka Asmita Dey, who created history by winning India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in judo in the women’s 48-kg category at the Glasgow 2026 Games. The 23-year-old athlete from Belonia, South Tripura, is scheduled to return to the state on Wednesday, August 12, following her historic triumph.
According to the report, celebrations have already begun in Tripura ahead of Asmita’s homecoming. The state’s Sports and Youth Welfare Department is scheduled to felicitate the champion upon her return today at 1 pm at RabindraSatabarshiki Bhavan in presence of Chief Minister Prof Dr Manik Saha and Sports Minister Tinku Roy.
Asmita is then expected to travel to her native village, Sonaichhari in the Belonia area of South Tripura, where preparations are reportedly underway to give the daughter of the state a grand welcome. The South Tripura district administration is also expected to felicitate her in recognition of her historic achievement.
One of the most significant developments surrounding Asmita’s homecoming is the Tripura Government’s reported decision to honour her with a plot of land in Agartala.
According to the news report, Asmita had recently met Chief Minister Manik Saha in Delhi. During their conversation, she reportedly expressed a desire for a house in Agartala, explaining that having accommodation in the state capital would make things more convenient for her.
Following the discussion, the Chief Minister is reported to have personally taken up the matter with the concerned departments. The necessary government procedures have reportedly been initiated, with the proposal for providing land to Asmita expected to come before the state Cabinet for approval.
The proposed gesture is being viewed as a special recognition of an unprecedented sporting achievement. If approved, the state government would provide Asmita with land in Agartala so that she can have a permanent home in the state capital.
