MBB College Student Allegedly Abducted and Gang-Raped in Agartala, Incident Sparks Concern Over Women’s Safety

A serious allegation of sexual assault involving a college student has triggered concern and anger in Agartala after a student of the historic Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) College was allegedly abducted from the college area and sexually assaulted by a group of men.

According to a news report, the incident took place on Monday after the student left the college. She was allegedly forced into a vehicle and taken away, where she was reportedly subjected to gang rape before being abandoned. The allegations have raised fresh questions over the safety of women and students in the state capital.

The incident reportedly came to light after the student and her family approached the police. The exact sequence of events and the identities and number of persons allegedly involved are expected to be established through the police investigation.

The alleged incident has created considerable anxiety among students, parents and members of the public, particularly in and around educational institutions. The MBB College campus, one of Agartala’s prominent educational institutions, has consequently come under renewed focus regarding security arrangements for students travelling to and from the campus.

According to the report, the alleged perpetrators were a group of several persons and a vehicle was used in carrying out the crime. The report also stated that the victim was allegedly taken away against her will and later abandoned.

Police have reportedly initiated an investigation into the allegations. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), according to the police report. Investigators are expected to examine the victim’s statement, medical evidence, CCTV footage, mobile-phone and other electronic records, as well as the movements of the vehicle allegedly used in the incident.

The incident has also revived a wider public debate over crimes against women and girls in Tripura. Students and parents have expressed concern over whether adequate security measures are in place around colleges, schools and other educational institutions, particularly during the hours when students travel between campuses and their homes.

The alleged assault has further intensified demands for swift investigation and stringent legal action against anyone found responsible.
