Tipra Motha ready to contest all 587 village committee seats independently, Pradyot denies holding talks with any national party in New Delhi

Tipra Motha founder and former chairman of the party’s advisory committee, Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, on Monday made it clear that his party will not enter into any electoral alliance for the forthcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) village committee elections unless the 2024 tripartite agreement is implemented and a constitutional solution is found to the issues raised by the indigenous people of Tripura.

Speaking with media from New Delhi, Debbarma also categorically denied reports and speculation that Tipra Motha had held any meeting with a national political party in the national capital regarding an electoral understanding for the upcoming village committee polls.

He urged party leaders, workers and supporters not to be misled by rumours about a possible alliance and said Tipra Motha was prepared to contest all 587 seats in the village committee elections on its own.

No alliance without substantive progress

Debbarma’s statement comes at a time when political circles in Tripura are witnessing intense speculation over a possible electoral arrangement between the ruling BJP and Tipra Motha.

Although Tipra Motha is a constituent of the BJP-led Tripura Government, the party has retained its separate political identity and has continued to press for the implementation of commitments made under the tripartite agreement signed in March 2024.

The agreement was reached between the Government of India, the Government of Tripura and representatives of the indigenous people of Tripura after negotiations over long-standing demands concerning the political, economic, social and cultural rights of the State’s indigenous population.

For Tipra Motha, implementation of the agreement remains one of the central political issues.

Debbarma has now linked the issue directly to any possible electoral understanding, making it clear that the party would not enter into an alliance merely on the basis of seat-sharing or electoral calculations.

‘Prepare to contest all 587 seats’

In his message, Debbarma asked Tipra Motha leaders and grassroots workers to remain prepared for an independent electoral battle.

His announcement that the party is ready to contest all 587 village committee seats sends a strong political message at a time when speculation over a possible BJP–Tipra Motha understanding has intensified.

The decision, if implemented, could significantly influence the electoral calculations of all major political parties in the TTAADC areas.

Tipra Motha has its strongest organisational and electoral base in the tribal council region, having emerged as a major political force under Debbarma’s leadership.
