Tripura Sets September 30 Deadline to Complete Road Repairs Ahead of Durga Puja: PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte Orders Strict Quality Monitoring

The Tripura Government has launched an extensive drive to repair and maintain roads across the state ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja, with the authorities setting September 30, 2026, as the deadline for completing the identified road maintenance works.
Disclosing the details at a press conference at the Secretariat on Monday, PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte, IAS, said the government has placed special emphasis not only on completing road maintenance works within the stipulated timeframe but also on ensuring that the quality of the works is not compromised.
The decision follows a high-level review meeting held on August 8 at the TIFIT War Room, chaired by Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha. The meeting reviewed the condition of roads across Tripura and the progress of ongoing maintenance works. Officials from the Public Works Department (PWD), National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and other concerned departments presented district-wise progress reports and future action plans.
The Chief Minister directed the concerned agencies to complete road maintenance works before Durga Puja while maintaining strict quality standards.
According to PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte, a massive road maintenance programme is currently underway across three major PWD wings.
Under PWD (Roads & Bridges), maintenance work covers 1,006 roads stretching approximately 1,622 kilometres. These works have been targeted for completion by September 30.
Similarly, 119 roads covering 665 kilometres fall under PWD (PMGSY), while 32 roads covering 377 kilometres are under PWD (National Highways).
Altogether, maintenance work will be undertaken on 1,157 roads covering nearly 2,664 kilometres across these three wings.
The PWD Secretary also provided details of ongoing maintenance works on several important National Highway stretches.
Under NHIDCL, maintenance work is currently underway on a 16-kilometre stretch of NH-08 from Champaknagar to the Nalgaria Railway Bridge.
Maintenance works are also being carried out on-
38 km of NH-108B between Khowai and Agartala
80.2 km of NH-208 between Khowai and Kailashahar
105.9 km of NH-08 between Churaibari and Agartala.
The stretch from Nalgaria Railway Bridge to ISBT Chandrapur will be maintained through PWD (Roads & Bridges).
Gitte acknowledged that road maintenance work has been affected to some extent by continuous rainfall since March this year. Prolonged rainfall has resulted in the formation of potholes at several locations across the state.
However, he clarified that the department has adequate financial resources for road maintenance, indicating that funding would not be a major constraint in completing the planned works.
The government has decided to give special priority to roads connecting district headquarters, sub-divisional headquarters, bus stands, railway stations, hospitals and important Durga Puja venues.
With the movement of people expected to increase significantly during the festive season, the authorities are focusing on completing maintenance works on these strategically important roads on an urgent basis.
The objective is to ensure smoother and safer movement of people during Durga Puja.
PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte made it clear that there would be no compromise on the quality of road maintenance works.
Officials have been instructed to take necessary action wherever maintenance work is not being executed properly. Superintending Engineers, Executive Engineers, Assistant Engineers and Junior Engineers have been directed to regularly inspect worksites and review both the quality and progress of maintenance works.
