BSF firing kills Bangladeshi national near Tripura border

A 24-year-old Bangladeshi national was killed in BSF firing near the India-Bangladesh international border in Kailashahar early Sunday after a group allegedly attempted to cross the border while carrying narcotic substances, sources said.

The deceased was identified as Tara Mia, a resident of Dasteki village under Prithimpasha in Kulaura upazila of Bangladesh's Moulvibazar district. His father was identified as Abdul Malik.

According to local and BSF sources, around five to six Bangladeshi youths allegedly entered the area near the fencing lights close to border pillar 1845/63-S in the Magurawli Gram Panchayat area under Gournagar RD Block at around 1 am.

The group was allegedly armed and involved in smuggling narcotic substances, the sources said. BSF personnel on duty repeatedly warned them to stop and leave the area, but they allegedly did not comply.

The BSF subsequently opened fire, in which Tara Mia sustained critical injuries and died at the spot, according to the sources.

Following the incident, BSF personnel and police from Irani police station reached the area and completed the necessary legal formalities. The body was later recovered and taken to Unakoti District Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Dr Imran Ahmed, the duty doctor at the hospital, said the body was brought to the hospital at around 11 am on Sunday. The post-mortem examination was conducted later in the day and the body was kept in the morgue, he said.

The necessary legal procedures were being followed, the doctor said.

The body is likely to be handed over to Bangladeshi authorities through the Manu Land Customs border in Kailashahar on Monday, sources said.
