Forest Minister stresses hills-plains cooperation for Tripura’s development

Tripura Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma on Sunday stressed the need for closer cooperation between the state’s hill and plain areas, saying development of Tripura depended on both regions working together.

Addressing a programme organised by the Forest Department to observe the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, Debbarma said political differences should not undermine the need for economic cooperation.

“Sometimes politics teaches us to divide. But economics teaches us that we should go together. The message today is very clear — hills and plains need each other,” he said.

Debbarma said the occasion also provided an opportunity to discuss issues concerning indigenous communities and their relationship with forests, biodiversity and the natural environment.

He highlighted the role of indigenous communities in protecting natural resources and maintaining a harmonious relationship with nature.

The programme also saw nine people being honoured for their contributions to various forms of performing arts, including poetry and folk music, officials said.
