CM Manik Saha May Leaves for Delhi Today for Crucial Meeting with Central BJP Leadership Over Tipra Motha and Village Committee Polls

Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha is once again travelling to New Delhi for a crucial round of discussions with the BJP’s central leadership amid growing political attention over the proposed electoral understanding with its alliance partner, Tipra Motha, for the upcoming Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

The Chief Minister’s Delhi visit comes at a politically significant juncture, with the September 27 Village Committee elections approaching and questions remaining over whether the BJP and Tipra Motha will contest the polls together or separately. The Supreme Court has already directed the Tripura State Election Commission to conduct the long-pending Village Committee elections in a single phase on September 27.

According to reports, the BJP’s central leadership is expected to take a final view on the electoral strategy after discussions with the Tipra Motha leadership. Recent reports have indicated that senior BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to play a key role in the talks involving Chief Minister Manik Saha and Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma.

The proposed talks assume importance because the BJP and Tipra Motha, although partners in the Tripura government, have followed different political approaches during recent elections in the tribal areas. The relationship has also faced considerable strain over the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord and other issues concerning the indigenous population.

Sources indicate that the focus of the Delhi discussions is likely to remain on the Village Committee elections and the possibility of arriving at an electoral formula acceptable to both sides. Tipra Motha is understood to have certain conditions before agreeing to any seat-sharing arrangement, while the BJP has maintained that it is organisationally prepared to contest the elections independently if necessary.

Chief Minister Manik Saha himself yesterday indicated that discussions regarding a possible BJP–Tipra Motha understanding were continuing, while making it clear that the BJP was prepared for the electoral battle even in the absence of an alliance. Fresh reports on August 8 suggested that the Chief Minister had indicated that a possible understanding was still under consideration.

The political significance of the discussions extends beyond the Village Committee polls. The elections will be the first major grassroots electoral test for the BJP and Tipra Motha after their differences became particularly visible during the 2026 TTAADC elections. The two parties had contested those elections against each other despite being coalition partners in the state government.

For Tipra Motha, the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord remains a central political issue. The party has been pressing for tangible progress on the commitments relating to the rights and interests of the indigenous population. The BJP, meanwhile, has been seeking to maintain its political relationship with Tipra Motha while simultaneously strengthening its own organisational presence in the ADC areas.

The Village Committee elections could therefore become a crucial test of the future of the BJP–Tipra Motha relationship. A joint contest could help the two parties avoid a direct division of votes in several tribal areas and potentially strengthen their combined position. A separate contest, on the other hand, could deepen the political differences that became evident during the ADC elections.

The stakes are also high because the next Assembly election in Tripura is scheduled for 2028. The manner in which the two parties handle the Village Committee elections could provide important indications about their future electoral strategy and whether the present coalition arrangement can continue without a broader political understanding between the two organisations.

The immediate spotlight, therefore, is now on New Delhi. Chief Minister Manik Saha’s discussions with the central leadership, followed by possible negotiations with Tipra Motha, could determine whether the BJP and Tipra Motha move towards a common electoral strategy for the Village Committee polls or prepare for another direct contest in the tribal areas.
