Chakma language and script day celebrated in the state

Tripura government has decided to have the minority Chakma language included in the ‘Google Translate’ platform and for this a data base of 50 thousand Chakma words is being prepared. Stating this in the central programme on Chakma language and script day yesterday, the minister for industries Santana Chakma said that the state government is keen to preserve and protect all minority languages in the state as part of this a data base on Chakma words is being prepared. The programme was also attended by the minister for tourism Sushanta Chowdhury.

Santana Chakma said that the Chakma language in written form on an original script has been in vogue over a long period of time and there is also a rich literature in this language . “There is no dearth of poetry, novels, stories and dramas in this language ;many magazines on literature are also being published on a regular basis” said Santana. She also demanded that Chakma language be taught from the Anganwadi and pre-primary level and called upon all to take an oath to preserve and protect their mother tongue, that is the Chakma language.

Speaking on the occasion the minister for tourism and food and civil supply Sushanta Chowdhury said that a language can survive only if the speakers unite and make a collective effort. “There are 19 tribal groups in Tripura and the state government is eager to ensure preservation and protection of all their languages and cultures” Sushanta said . He added that the state government has taken positive action to protect the Chakma language and as part of this in the current academic year students from class I to VIII are studying in Chakma language . In addition , there are now more than 4 thousand Chakma speaking students and 172 Chakma speaking teachers have been appointed for them. “We have also taken an initiative to ensure that students can study up to class XII in Chakma language ; this will take effect soon” said Sushanta . Yesterday’s state level Chakma language and script day was celebrated in all Chakma dominated areas of the state and the central programme was held in Rabindra Shata Varshiki Bhawan. 0
