Agartala to Host 23rd CPA India Region Zone-III Conference in November, Tripura Assembly Speaker Invites Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla

In a significant step towards preparations for the prestigious 23rd Annual Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Zone-III, Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker Rampada Jamatia on Friday met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in New Delhi and formally invited him to attend the conference, which is scheduled to be held in Agartala in November 2026.

During the meeting, held at around 2:45 PM on August 7, Speaker Rampada Jamatia extended an official invitation to the Lok Sabha Speaker for the CPA conference, which is slated to take place on November 26 and 27, 2026 in Agartala. The conference will bring together Speakers, Deputy Speakers, Presiding Officers and senior parliamentary representatives from the eight Northeastern states under the CPA India Region Zone-III and the North East Regional Institute of Parliamentary Studies, Training and Research (NERIPSTR).

The conference, which was originally scheduled for April 2026, had been postponed due to monsoon-related conditions. It will now be hosted by the Tripura Legislative Assembly, marking a major parliamentary event for the state.

During his meeting with Om Birla, Rampada Jamatia also submitted a memorandum seeking support for the construction of a 50-room VVIP Vidhayak Atithi Shala (MLAs' Guest House) in Tripura. The proposed facility, spread over approximately 25,000 square feet, is estimated to cost Rs.15 crore. The Speaker requested the Lok Sabha Speaker to recommend the proposal to the appropriate authorities for financial assistance, stating that such infrastructure would be essential for accommodating dignitaries and legislators visiting the state during major parliamentary events.

Later in the evening, at around 6:00 PM, Rampada Jamatia met Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Jual Oram in New Delhi. During the meeting, he submitted another memorandum requesting the sanction of Rs. 84 lakh to operate buses for students enrolled in Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) until the construction of hostel facilities is completed.

The proposal aims to ensure uninterrupted transportation for tribal students studying in EMRS institutions across Tripura during the interim period before residential accommodation becomes available. The Speaker urged the Union Tribal Affairs Ministry to extend financial support considering the educational needs of students from remote tribal areas.

The meetings reflect the Tripura Legislative Assembly's efforts to strengthen parliamentary infrastructure ahead of the high-profile CPA conference while simultaneously pursuing development initiatives for the welfare of tribal students in the state.

The forthcoming CPA India Region Zone-III Conference is expected to be one of the largest parliamentary gatherings hosted by Tripura, providing a platform for discussions on legislative practices, parliamentary governance, regional cooperation, and democratic institutions among the northeastern states. The event is also expected to enhance Tripura's profile as a host for major national parliamentary engagements.
