Drug menace alarming in Kailasahar , deputation with police station

The menace of drug peddling and addiction have registered a steep hike in Kailasahar town of Unakoti district . Along side the addiction there has also been a spurt in incidents of petty crimes like theft , snatching by addicted youths for managing money for purchasing costly drugs . The situation has taken such an alarming turn in Ward no-9 of the Kailasahar municipality that the councilor of the ward Manasi Chakraborty , accompanied by influential residents of the area, this morning met in deputation with the officer in charge of Kailasahar police station Shyamal Kanti Majumder to apprise him of the situation and press for drastic action to eradicate this menace at the earliest.

Sources from Kailasahar said that areas under Ward no-9 like Sriniketan shopping complex, crematorium area, locality close to the cinema hall and other areas continue to be badly affected by drug peddling by youths and addiction among a large number of students and youths. These youths consume drugs and loiter around or sit in the areas and common people find the affected areas quite unsafe for movement. The councilor Manasi Chakraborty pointed out to police that from dusk common people remain at home and do not dare to come out on streets in these areas for fear of snatching , theft or harassment by the addicted youths.

Having submitted a memorandum of complaint to the police councilor Manasi Chakraborty spoke to the waiting media and said that normal social life in her ward as well as in other areas of Kailasahar is on the point of coming to a standstill because of the menace of drug peddling and addiction. “The situation is such that even in daytime incidents of thefts in households occur as the drug addicted youths become desperate to get money for purchasing drugs to which they are addicted and this has created a situation of lawlessness and insecurity; I have apprised the police of the situation requesting for action” said Manasi. She added that unless the police act drastically even now the entire social life in Kailasahar will collapse and people will start leaving their homes for safer areas in other parts of the state.
