Infrastructural shortcoming, launching of technical and women university postponed for the current academic year

Tripura higher education department is all set to issue appointment letters for 200 assistant professors for state’s colleges while preparation is on for further appointment of 201 more assistant professors to make up for the shortfall of teachers in genera degree colleges across the state. This was stated by the minister for higher education Kishore Barman yesterday in an interaction with the media.

But what caused serious concern is that the minister also stated that the proposed technical and women universities of the state government can not be launched in the current academic year owng to lacunae in infrastructure. In the budget session of the state assembly the government had passed three bills for setting up a medical university, a technical university and a women university . While work on setting up the medical university is well in progress the government has decided to postpone the launching of technical and women universities due to lack of proper infrastructure. Speaking to media persons higher education minister Kishore Barman said that the admission process for post-graduate courses has already been completed and the government has decided to postpone the process of setting up technical and women universities for the next academic year even though the Centre has indicated its willingness to provide funds for all three universities.

Kishore Barman said that the new education policy (NEP) of centre has made specific stipulations for setting up universities in terms of infrastructure and it has been noticed that providing infrastructure for the technical and women universities in the current academic year is not possible and hence the postponement. This however has put the students of womens college in a spot as this college was supposed to be upgraded to the women university and many students who graduated this year did not appear at the central university entrance test (CUET) expecting admission to the women university . Now they are struggling to avoid wasting a year for university studies and planning to secure admission to private universities at high cost. The second option for them is the state-run MBB university but the number of seats there is limited. Sources in the higher education department said that despite central sanction given two years ago the state government has not yet completed the process of appointments to various teaching and non-teachings posts for the proposed universities . However the medical university is likely to begin functioning within the current academic year.
