Tripura Team Visits Guwahati Tea Auction Centre, Agartala Tea Auction Centre Set to Begin Operations by September-End

In a significant step towards strengthening the tea industry in Tripura and the North Eastern region, a high-level delegation from the Tripura Tea Development Corporation (TTDC) visited the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC), one of India's most modern and technologically advanced tea auction platforms, to study its operational model and adopt global best practices for the upcoming Agartala Tea Auction Centre.

The delegation comprised Shri Samir Ranjan Ghosh, Chairman of TTDC, and Er. Rajesh Kumar Das, IAS, Managing Director of TTDC. They were accompanied during the visit by Smt. Arunita Phukan, Executive Director of Tea Board India, along with senior officials of the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) and the Assam Tea Auction Centre (ATA).

During the visit, Shri Priyanuz Dutta, Secretary of GTAC, delivered a comprehensive presentation explaining the complete functioning of the auction centre. The presentation covered every stage of the tea auction process, including the arrival and cataloguing of tea consignments, quality assessment, electronic auction mechanisms, buyer participation, logistics management, settlement procedures, and the use of digital technology to ensure transparency, efficiency and timely transactions.

The delegation described the visit as an enriching learning experience, noting that GTAC has emerged as a benchmark in modern tea marketing through its transparent and technology-driven auction system. Officials observed that such a model can significantly improve the tea value chain by ensuring better price realisation for growers, enhancing market transparency, increasing buyer participation and expanding business opportunities for tea producers.

Inspired by the successful functioning of the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre, the Tripura Tea Development Corporation has expressed its commitment to incorporating similar best practices in the upcoming Agartala Tea Auction Centre. The new auction facility is expected to become operational by the end of September 2026.

Officials believe that the establishment of the Agartala Tea Auction Centre will mark a transformational milestone for Tripura's tea sector. The facility is expected to provide local tea growers and manufacturers with easier market access, reduce dependence on distant auction centres, improve competitiveness, and create a more efficient marketing ecosystem. It is also expected to benefit buyers, exporters and other stakeholders while enhancing the overall value of Tripura's tea industry.

The delegation expressed gratitude to Tea Board India, the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre and the Assam Tea Auction Centre for their warm hospitality, valuable guidance and continued support. They reaffirmed their commitment to building a stronger, sustainable and globally competitive tea ecosystem in Tripura and the North Eastern region.

With the Agartala Tea Auction Centre nearing completion, Tripura is poised to enter a new era in tea marketing, offering fresh opportunities for growers and strengthening the state's position in India's tea industry.
