Patient's death at Dharmanagar district hospital triggers negligence allegations; police launch probe

The death of a 55-year-old man at a district hospital in Tripura's North district on Thursday triggered protests by his family, who alleged that he did not receive timely medical attention after being brought to the emergency ward.The incident occurred at Dharmanagar District Hospital, where relatives of the deceased, identified as Jalal Uddin of the Batrashi area, alleged that doctors failed to provide prompt treatment and that delays in conducting an electrocardiogram (ECG) contributed to his death.According to the family, the patient was taken to the hospital after he fell ill. They said the attending doctor advised an ECG, but alleged that the first ECG machine was not functioning and that valuable time was lost before another machine could be arranged.The family further alleged that the patient did not receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and accused the hospital of medical negligence.

The allegations led to commotion at the hospital, following which members of the deceased's family lodged a written complaint at Dharmanagar Police Station.Rejecting the allegations, the attending doctor, Dr Soumeli Nath, said the patient had died before reaching the hospital.She said the ECG was advised as part of the medical protocol to confirm the death. Dr Nath also disputed the family's claim regarding the ECG machine, stating that the same machine had been used to examine another patient shortly before the incident.

The doctor further alleged that some members of the deceased's family misbehaved with her after the patient's death.Police said they had registered a complaint and initiated an investigation into the incident.They said the inquiry would examine the circumstances leading to the patient's death and ascertain whether there had been any medical negligence.

There was no immediate statement from the hospital administration on the allegations made by the deceased's family.
