A crucial high-level meeting between the BJP and TIPRA Motha is likely to be held in New Delhi on August 8 or 9 to discuss a possible electoral understanding for the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Village Council elections, according to highly placed sources in TIPRA Motha.
Party sources said that a closed-door strategy meeting was held in Shillong on Wednesday in the presence of TIPRA Motha Founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma and several senior party leaders to finalise the agenda for the proposed Delhi talks. During the meeting, the party leadership reportedly reached a unanimous decision in principle to explore an electoral alliance with the BJP for the Village Council elections.
However, sources indicated that TIPRA Motha has decided to place a set of conditions before agreeing to any electoral understanding. Foremost among them is the implementation of the commitments made under the earlier tripartite agreement signed in New Delhi between the Centre, the Government of Tripura and TIPRA Motha.
According to party insiders, the leadership is also expected to seek changes in the state cabinet. One of the key demands under discussion is the replacement of Tribal Welfare Minister Animesh Debbarma with TIPRA Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma. Besides this, several other organisational and political demands are also expected to be placed before the BJP leadership during the proposed meeting.
Sources further revealed that the Delhi meeting may be attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) BL Santhosh, BJP National Spokesperson Sambit Patra, and Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on behalf of the BJP.
Representing TIPRA Motha, the meeting is expected to include Founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, MLA Ranjit Debbarma, and senior leader Biswaketu Debbarma.
If held as scheduled, the meeting is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the political equations ahead of the TTAADC Village Council elections and could have a significant impact on the future of the BJP–TIPRA Motha alliance in Tripura.
