Surrendered militants' bodies call indefinite rail, road blockade from Aug 13 over pending rehabilitation demands

Organisations representing surrendered militants in Tripura on Wednesday announced an indefinite blockade of railway services and a national highway from August 13, claiming that successive rounds of talks with the state government have failed to address their long-standing rehabilitation demands.

Speaking at a press conference in Agartala, leaders of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) and the Joint Action for Rehabilitation Committee (JARC) said they had abandoned insurgency and joined the democratic process following appeals from the Centre and the state government. Despite this, they alleged that they were yet to receive any financial rehabilitation package.

The representatives said their nine-point charter of demands has been pending for a considerable period despite repeated submissions to both the state and central governments.

They said the organisations had earlier organised a blockade of railway tracks and the national highway on June 24 but withdrew the agitation after the government sought time for discussions.

According to the leaders, a high-level meeting held subsequently with the state government did not produce any concrete outcome. Another meeting took place on Wednesday in the presence of the state's Tribal Welfare Minister, but they alleged that it too ended without any breakthrough.

Following the latest round of discussions, the organisations decided to intensify their protest by launching an indefinite blockade from August 13.

The groups said the road blockade would be organised at Sadhuchandra Para in Champaknagar, while demonstrators would occupy railway tracks at Bhrigudas Para.

There was no immediate response from the state government to the organisations' announcement.
