Tripura University Scholar Joins SRM University as Assistant Professor, Marking a Historic Milestone for Economics Department

The Department of Economics at Tripura University has reached a significant milestone with the appointment of Dr. Kiran Bhowmik, who recently earned his PhD in Economics from the university, as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai. The appointment is being celebrated as a historic achievement, as Dr. Bhowmik is the first PhD graduate from the Department of Economics at Tripura University to secure a faculty position at the prestigious institution.

Founded in 1985, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Potheri, is among India's leading private deemed universities, with more than 60,000 students enrolled across disciplines including Engineering, Medicine, Management, Science, Law, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The Vice-Chancellor of Tripura University, Professor Debabrata Das, congratulated Dr. Bhowmik on his appointment and conveyed his best wishes for a successful academic career. Dr. Bhowmik's journey reflects determination and resilience. Born in Udaipur, Tripura, he was raised in a financially constrained family. His father, Kajal Bhowmik, worked as a Daily Rated Worker in the Department of Agriculture, while his mother, Namita Bhowmik, consistently encouraged her children to pursue higher education despite significant economic hardships.

After completing his schooling in Udaipur, Dr. Bhowmik became the first student to obtain an Honours degree in Economics from Netaji Subhash Mahavidyalaya. He later completed both his Master's degree and PhD in Economics from Tripura University under the supervision of Professor Subhrabaran Das. His doctoral research focused on agricultural transformation and tribal livelihoods in Tripura, contributing valuable insights into rural development, agricultural economics, and public policy.

In addition to his doctoral research, Dr. Bhowmik earned recognition as an NPTEL Motivated Learner by successfully completing advanced academic courses offered by the Indian Institutes of Technology, including IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee. He also served as a Research Associate in studies undertaken for the Sixteenth Finance Commission, contributing to research on state finances and public policy.
