A jubilant atmosphere prevailed at Indira Gandhi International Airport as India's judo sensation Asmita Dey returned home following her historic gold medal victory at the Commonwealth Games 2026. The 23-year-old athlete from a small village in South Tripura was accorded a grand welcome, with supporters, sports enthusiasts, officials, and admirers greeting her with cheers, garlands, flowers, and thunderous applause.
Asmita scripted history by becoming India's first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medalist in the women's 48 kg judo category, a landmark achievement that has brought immense pride to both Tripura and the nation.
In recognition of her remarkable accomplishment, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya felicitated Asmita and other Commonwealth Games champions at a special ceremony organised by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. During the event, Asmita was presented with a Rs. 30 lakh cash award, honouring her historic gold-medal performance and acknowledging her contribution to Indian sports.
Visibly emotional and overwhelmed by the warm reception she received, Asmita expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported her journey. She said the love and encouragement from people across the country have strengthened her resolve to aim even higher.
"My next dream is to compete at the Olympic Games and win a medal for India," she said, adding that her Commonwealth Games triumph is only the beginning of a much bigger journey.
Asmita's inspiring rise—from a small village in Tripura to standing atop the Commonwealth Games podium—has become a symbol of determination, perseverance, and excellence. Her success is expected to inspire countless young athletes, particularly from the Northeast, to pursue their sporting ambitions with confidence and dedication.
Her golden homecoming not only celebrated an extraordinary sporting achievement but also reflected the growing support being extended to Indian athletes.
