Missing man's body recovered from pond in Khowai district

The decomposed body of a 47-year-old man, who had been missing for the past four to five days, was recovered from a pond in Tripura's Khowai district on Monday, police said.

The body was found in a pond at Bagan Bazar Tea Garden under the Dwarikapur Gram Panchayat area of Kalyanpur police station, triggering concern among local residents.

The deceased was identified as Sanjit Tanti (47), a resident of the area and son of Sachindra Tanti.

According to family members, Tanti had been missing from his home for the last four to five days. Despite searching at various places, the family was unable to trace him.

Police said local residents spotted a body floating in the pond on Monday morning and immediately alerted nearby people before informing Kalyanpur police station. A police team rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.

Officials said the body was in a decomposed state, indicating that it had remained in the water for several days.

Police have registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation.

"The exact cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem report is received. We are examining all possible angles to ascertain whether there was any foul play," a police official said.

Investigators are also questioning the deceased's family members and local residents as part of the probe, officials said.

Local residents said Tanti had been struggling with drug addiction for a long time and had been leading an unsettled life. However, police said the circumstances leading to his death could not be established at this stage and that further investigation would depend on the findings of the post-mortem examination.
