Resident Students Catch Hostel Kitchen Staff Allegedly Stealing Food Supplies at Agartala Girls' Hostel

A major controversy erupted at the Dr BR Ambedkar Memorial Girls' Hostel in Agartala on Sunday after resident students allegedly caught three women engaged in cooking duties red-handed while taking away food items meant for hostel inmates.

According to the resident students, the incident took place during the afternoon, triggering protests inside the hostel. The students alleged that the three women had been regularly taking away food supplies allocated for the hostel, depriving the inmates of their rightful meals.

The hostel accommodates around 140 resident Girls students. The students claimed that the hostel superintendent allocates sufficient quantities of rice, pulses, potatoes, eggs, fish and meat based on the number of boarders. However, they alleged that despite adequate allocation, they have consistently been receiving insufficient food because a portion of the supplies was allegedly being stolen on a daily basis by the kitchen staff.

The situation came to a head on Sunday when several students reportedly intercepted the three women and allegedly recovered food items they claim were being taken out of the hostel premises. The incident sparked widespread anger among the residents, who demanded strict action against those responsible.

The students further alleged that the three women were appointed to the hostel around two years ago after the previous workers were replaced. It is alleged that the appointments were made following recommendations from local political leadership.

Following the incident, tension prevailed inside the hostel as students demanded an impartial inquiry, recovery of the alleged losses, and immediate measures to ensure that food meant for hostel residents is not misappropriated in the future.

There was no immediate official statement from the hostel authorities or the administration regarding the allegations. The claims made by the students in front of media could not be independently verified, and the response of the accused women was not immediately available.

The incident has raised serious concerns over the management of government-run hostels and the monitoring of food supplies intended for students.
