Airport Police Station OC Sushanta Deb Suspended Over Alleged Refusal to Register Woman's Complaint

Airport Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sushanta Deb has been suspended from service following allegations that he refused to register a complaint filed by Jhuma Roy, a woman who later approached the High Court seeking justice.

According to the allegations, the suspension was ordered after the OC allegedly failed to accept Jhuma Roy's complaint and instead summoned her to the police station, where she was allegedly subjected to unnecessary harassment. The matter subsequently came before the High Court.

During Thursday's hearing, counsel representing the police informed the High Court that disciplinary action had already been taken against the officer and that Sushanta Deb had been suspended. The case has been listed for further hearing on Friday.

The incident has drawn significant public attention, with allegations that the former OC had, on several previous occasions, refused to register FIRs and had allegedly encouraged settlements in exchange for money. It has also been alleged that he failed to comply with directions issued by the Superintendent of Police, West Tripura.

Following the complaint involving Jhuma Roy, West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak, IPS reportedly ordered the suspension of the Airport Police Station OC pending further departmental proceedings.

Speaking to the media after the hearing, senior advocate Purushottam Roy Barman, appearing for the complainant, said the suspension reflected the seriousness of the allegations and exposed what he described as the deteriorating condition of policing in Tripura. He argued that the action taken against the officer underscored the need for greater accountability and strict adherence to legal procedures in handling citizens' complaints.

The High Court is expected to continue hearing the matter on Friday, when further submissions from both sides are likely to be made. The outcome of the proceedings may determine the next course of legal and departmental action.
