A retired bank manager lost his life after a brutal assault in Sonamura, while another injured survivor has publicly alleged that the attack was a pre-planned act carried out by a group of local criminals allegedly linked to an organized rubber theft syndicate. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with residents questioning the deteriorating law and order situation and the alleged inaction of law enforcement despite repeated complaints over the years.

According to local sources, retired bank manager Narayan Ghosh was brought to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala yesterday afternoon in critical condition after the attack. Despite the doctors' best efforts, he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

Another victim, Abhijit Ghosh, who is receiving treatment with severe head and body injuries, spoke to the media from his hospital bed. Despite his physical condition, he clearly alleged before the camera that Subhash Baidya, Khokon Baidya, Sujit Debnath, Joy Das, and Pradip Sarkar were involved in orchestrating the attack. He further claimed that they were supporters of a local rubber theft racket that had allegedly been operating in the area for a long time.

As of the filing of this report, the principal accused had not been arrested. Police from Melaghar Police Station stated that extensive search operations were underway across the area to trace the suspects. However, the delay in apprehending those named has intensified public concern and anger.

Residents say the incident is not an isolated crime but the culmination of years of unchecked criminal activity in Takshapara under Sonamura and surrounding areas, where an organized network of rubber thieves is alleged to have operated with near impunity. According to locals, rubber sheets and latex worth lakhs of rupees have repeatedly been stolen from plantations, yet many victims have been reluctant to come forward due to fear of reprisals.

People in the locality claim that several written complaints and verbal representations had previously been submitted to Melaghar Police Station seeking stronger action against the alleged syndicate. They allege that no sustained crackdown, regular patrolling, or effective preventive measures were undertaken, allowing the accused to continue their activities without fear of legal consequences.

The shocking killing of a retired bank manager has now become a flashpoint, with residents alleging that prolonged administrative inaction emboldened criminal elements. Many believe the failure to respond decisively to earlier complaints created an environment in which violent crimes could escalate unchecked.

The incident has also triggered a series of difficult questions from the public. Residents are asking whether ordinary citizens can feel safe even inside their own homes if such attacks can occur so brazenly. They are demanding to know why repeated complaints regarding theft and criminal activities allegedly failed to result in effective police intervention.

Some local residents have also questioned whether influential individuals allegedly backing the rubber theft network have enjoyed protection, or whether there was any failure within the enforcement system that prevented timely action. These allegations have not been independently verified, and there is no official evidence at this stage establishing any involvement of police personnel or administrative officials. Authorities have not responded publicly to these specific allegations.

The tragic death of Narayan Ghosh has transformed what was initially viewed as a criminal assault into a larger debate over public safety, policing, and accountability in the region. Citizens are now demanding the immediate arrest of all those responsible, a thorough and impartial investigation into the alleged rubber theft syndicate, and strict legal action against everyone found involved in the crime.

As police continue their search for the accused, the incident has become a powerful reminder of the consequences that can arise when allegations of organized crime remain unresolved for prolonged periods, leaving communities fearful and demanding justice.
