National Law University Tripura Refutes TripuraInfo Report, Denies ICC Interference and Sexual Harassment Cover-Up Allegations

The National Law University Tripura (NLUT) has issued a formal rejoinder strongly disputing the allegations published by TripuraInfo on July 28, 2026, under the headline, "Sexual Harassment Allegations Rock National Law University, Registrar Resigns as State Human Rights Commission Reportedly Begins Probe." In its response, the University described the report as "factually incorrect," asserting that it contains unverified allegations capable of damaging the reputation of both the institution and the individuals concerned.

However, it is also clarified that following the complaint received by the Tripura State Human Rights Commission, the then Registrar, Prof. Nachiketa Mittal, resigned from the University.

According to the rejoinder, the University categorically denied claims that Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Yogesh Pratap Singh interfered with the functioning of the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) or discouraged students and faculty members from filing complaints. The University clarified that, although the Tripura State Human Rights Commission has initiated an inquiry based on an anonymous complaint involving Prof. Nachiketa Mittal, no complaint has been filed before the University's ICC against him to date. Consequently, the University stated that there has been no occasion for the ICC to initiate any proceedings.

The rejoinder further emphasized that the ICC functions independently in accordance with the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, the relevant UGC Regulations, and the University's own policies. It also rejected as "completely false and baseless" the allegation that the Vice-Chancellor discouraged anyone from approaching the ICC. Instead, the University asserted that the Vice-Chancellor has consistently encouraged students, faculty members, and staff to report grievances, including complaints relating to sexual harassment, without fear or hesitation.

In a joint statement, the Vice-Chancellor, along with the present and former Chairpersons of the ICC, reaffirmed that no individual has ever been prevented or discouraged from lodging complaints before the committee. They maintained that the University remains committed to transparency, fairness, confidentiality, due process, and ensuring a safe and gender-sensitive campus environment.
