Serious Allegations Surface Over Alleged Drug Trafficking and Cannabis Cultivation Network in Mohanpur & Sidai Area

Serious allegations have emerged from Tripura's Mohanpur subdivision, where local residents have claimed that parts of the Mohanpur and Sidai region have become an emerging corridor for illegal cannabis cultivation and drug trafficking. According to these allegations, the route stretching through Sidai–Khowai–Subalsingh–Kamalpur is increasingly being used for transporting narcotics, including cannabis, yaba tablets, brown sugar and other contraband.

Residents allege that the illegal trade has been expanding in several villages and remote pockets of the Sidai area, with drug syndicates allegedly operating with little fear of law enforcement. They claim that the growing narcotics trade is contributing to rising substance abuse among youth, as well as an increase in thefts, criminal activities and social unrest.

Some locals have further alleged that a section of the police has failed to take effective action against the alleged drug network. They have also accused certain politically influential individuals of providing protection to those involved in the illegal trade.

The allegations go further, claiming that influential political figures have informally argued that, since the government has been unable to provide sufficient employment opportunities for unemployed youth, law enforcement should not act too aggressively against cannabis cultivation and the narcotics trade in some areas. The same political bosses argued that the local people are hardly consume cannabis, and mostly cultivated cannabis is illegally export to Bangladesh.

But the local residents have appealed to senior police authorities, including the Superintendent of Police (West District), to conduct an impartial investigation into the allegations and intensify anti-narcotics operations in the area where large scale cannabis cultivation is being done.
