NCW chief arrives in Tripura on three-day tour

National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar reached Tripura on Tuesday for a three-day visit during which she is scheduled to take part in programmes on women's safety, inspect welfare institutions and hold meetings with civil and police officials.

Briefing reporters, Chairperson of Tripura Commission for Women Jharna Debbarma said Rahatkar will travel to Udaipur on Wednesday to attend the Gomati Zilla Parishad's "She Serves" programme. She is also slated to visit the One Stop Centre and participate in an awareness programme on child marriage and its social consequences at Rajarshi Hall.

Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy and MLA Abhishek Debroy are expected to attend the event.

Debbarma said the NCW chairperson will subsequently meet district administration and police officials to review issues concerning women and child safety.

On Thursday, Rahatkar will inspect Agartala Central Jail before holding discussions with the state's acting Director General of Police and other senior police officers.

Her itinerary also includes participation in an awareness programme on preventing stalking, the launch of the Tripura Women's Commission's official website, and a workshop on prevention of sexual harassment at workplaces at Sukanta Academy.

She is scheduled to leave the state later the same day.

Tripura Commission for Women Vice-Chairperson Madhumita Chowdhury, Member Secretary Pallabi Roy and other commission members were present at the press conference.
