Congress leader seeks judicial intervention in Tripura DGP death case

Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and Tripura MLA Sudip Roy Barman on Sunday urged the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court to ensure that the investigation into the death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar is carried out under the supervision of a sitting High Court judge.

Addressing a press conference in Agartala, Roy Barman said the circumstances surrounding the death of the senior IPS officer had raised serious public concerns and warranted judicial oversight to ensure an impartial investigation.

He questioned the state government's decision to entrust the probe to a team headed by the West Tripura Superintendent of Police, arguing that such an arrangement may not inspire public confidence. He also said there were questions over whether Dhankar's death was a case of suicide or homicide and referred to media reports citing observations by a forensic expert, which he claimed justified an independent probe.

Roy Barman further alleged that the officer had faced humiliation shortly before his death and was under pressure due to action against alleged drug traffickers, though he did not provide evidence to support the claims. He also questioned the circumstances under which CPR was administered and said the death of the state's top police officer inside his office chamber had raised concerns over security.

Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer, was found hanging in the washroom of his office at the Tripura Police Headquarters on July 20. The state government later constituted a probe team headed by the West Tripura SP to investigate the incident.
