Sexual Harassment Allegations Rock National Law University Tripura, Registrar Resigns as State Human Rights Commission Reportedly Begins Probe

Serious allegations of sexual harassment, abuse of authority, and attempts to suppress complaints have surfaced at the National Law University Tripura (NLUT), triggering widespread concern within academic and legal circles. According to the complainants, the matter has now drawn the attention of the Tripura State Human Rights Commission, which has reportedly initiated an inquiry into the allegations.
According to sources, at the centre of the controversy is former Registrar Prof. Nachiketa Mittal, who is alleged to have resigned from his post after the allegations emerged. Complainants claim that he had, over an extended period, sent obscene, sexually suggestive, and inappropriate messages to several female students and women employees of the university.
The complaints further allege that, in some instances, academic benefits, including examination marks and other academic favours, were allegedly used as inducements in exchange for sexual favours. It has also been alleged that at least one PhD scholar suffered severe mental trauma due to the alleged misconduct.
Another complaint states that a first-year BA-LLB student reportedly left the university midway through her course after being unable to cope with the psychological distress allegedly caused by the incidents.
According to the complainants, several victims were discouraged from coming forward and were allegedly warned that raising the issue could damage their academic and professional futures.
The role of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Yogesh Pratap Singh has also come under scrutiny. The complainants allege that when some students approached him seeking justice, they were allegedly advised to remain silent instead of receiving prompt redressal. It has also been alleged that the functioning of the university's Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) was interfered with, affecting the normal course of the inquiry.
