Questions Raised Over Recruitment and Administration in Tripura University's Department of Education, Complaint Seeks Greater Transparency

A formal complaint addressed to the media has raised a series of questions regarding the recruitment process and administrative functioning of the Department of Education at Tripura University, a Central University, alleging irregularities in faculty appointment and departmental administration while calling for greater transparency and accountability.

According to the complaint, the Department of Education was established with the objective of producing competent teachers, promoting quality research in education, and maintaining high academic standards in teacher education programmes such as the two-year BEd course. The complainant argues that these objectives can only be achieved through transparent recruitment, merit-based appointments, and efficient academic administration.

The complaint centres on the appointment of Abhijit Deb, who reportedly served as a Graduate Teacher under the Directorate of Elementary Education, Government of Tripura, from December 1, 2022, until June 11, 2025, before joining Tripura University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Education on June 17, 2025.

The complainant alleges that Mr. Deb secured the Assistant Professor position despite not possessing a PhD, raising questions about how the recruitment process was conducted. It points out that in many state recruitment processes, including those conducted by the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC), candidates without a PhD generally receive lower academic scores, making selection more difficult. On this basis, the complainant has sought clarification on whether all applicable University Grants Commission (UGC) and Central University recruitment norms were duly followed during the appointment process.

Another issue highlighted in the complaint relates to Mr. Deb's appointment as Head (In-Charge) of the Department on September 15, 2025. The complainant claims that the Department has largely relied on Guest Faculty since the BEd programme began in 2019 and that several of those Guest Faculty members possess PhD qualifications. This has reportedly led some students and stakeholders to question the basis on which the in-charge headship was assigned.

The complaint further alleges that, since assuming administrative responsibility, the Head (In-Charge) has not been taking classes for the BEd programme and that the departmental work environment has deteriorated due to administrative issues. It also claims that these concerns were communicated to the University's higher authorities through email but that no response or corrective action has been received.

The complainant has requested that these issues be independently examined in the interest of transparency, accountability and the maintenance of academic standards at Tripura University. The representation urges that, if the allegations are found to have merit, appropriate corrective measures should be initiated by the competent authorities.
