Tension in Tripura's Dhupatali as SDPO's Conduct During Road Blockade Sparks Public Outrage, Lathi-Charge Triggers Major Controversy

A police operation to lift a prolonged road blockade at Dhupatali in Gomati district has triggered widespread controversy after allegations of misconduct against Udaipur Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Debanjali Roy and a subsequent police lathi-charge on protesting villagers.
The agitation, led by residents of the Tulamura-Dhupatali area, was launched to demand the immediate repair of a severely damaged road that locals claim has remained neglected for a long time. The protest witnessed participation from hundreds of villagers, including women, cutting across political and community lines.
According to local residents, the blockade continued for more than 24 hours before police moved in to restore traffic. During negotiations, villagers allegedly challenged the administration with a series of questions regarding the poor condition of the road and demanded a written assurance for its repair. Eyewitnesses claimed that the SDPO failed to convince the protesters and that the discussion gradually turned into a heated exchange.
Protesters alleged that the police officer used inappropriate language, displayed an aggressive attitude, and made remarks that further angered the crowd. Several videos of the confrontation reportedly circulated on social media, intensifying public criticism and drawing widespread attention across the state.
As tensions escalated, police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the demonstrators and clear the road. Several villagers were reportedly injured in the incident, while at least four protesters were detained by the police.
The protest also witnessed emotional scenes as family members of those detained questioned the police action. One woman, whose son was among those arrested, alleged that he had committed no offence other than participating in a democratic protest demanding better roads. She accused the police of using excessive force against ordinary citizens.
Residents alleged that instead of addressing their long-pending demand for proper road connectivity, the administration attempted to suppress the protest through force. They argued that the agitation reflected years of public frustration over inadequate infrastructure and poor communication facilities in the area.
The incident has triggered a sharp political and public debate in Tripura over the handling of peaceful demonstrations, police conduct during negotiations, and the use of force to disperse protesters. Civil society members and opposition voices have demanded a fair inquiry into the police action and accountability if any excesses are established.
