Bangladesh Deputy High Commission Official Tariq Chayan Resigns in Kolkata, Says He Will Write a Book on His Diplomatic Journey

In a significant diplomatic development, Tariq Chayan, an official of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, has resigned from his post, citing both personal and professional reasons.

Announcing his decision, Chayan said he had spent "a beautiful one and a half years" in Kolkata and had sincerely tried to discharge all the responsibilities entrusted to him during his tenure. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in the city and described his assignment as a memorable chapter of his professional life.

"I have spent one and a half wonderful years in Kolkata. I tried my best to carry out the responsibilities entrusted to me with sincerity," Chayan said while confirming his resignation.

Reflecting on his experiences, he revealed that he intends to write a book in the future documenting his diplomatic career, office experiences, interactions with colleagues, and friendships formed in Kolkata. According to him, the book will offer insights into his professional journey as well as his personal experiences while serving in India.

The resignation comes at a time when Bangladesh's diplomatic appointments in India have been under heightened public and media scrutiny. In recent days, controversy erupted over the appointment of two Bangladeshi journalists to spokesperson positions at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and the Deputy High Commission in Kolkata after allegations surfaced regarding their previous social media posts that were viewed as critical of India. The issue drew widespread attention in both Indian and Bangladeshi media, with reports indicating that several of the controversial posts were subsequently deleted following public criticism.

Although Chayan's resignation has coincided with this period of diplomatic debate, there has been no official indication linking his decision to the recent controversy. He has maintained that his resignation is based solely on personal and professional considerations.

The Bangladesh government has not yet issued an official statement regarding his resignation or announced who will succeed him at the Deputy High Commission in Kolkata.
