Two Get 10 Years' Rigorous Imprisonment in NDPS Case

A special NDPS court in Tripura's Sabroom has sentenced two persons to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each after convicting them in a narcotics case.

The convicts, identified as Abhijit Das (28) and Subrata Das (23), are residents of Dumdum Daspara and Netaji Palli in Sabroom.

According to court records, the case relates to an incident on April 22, 2023, when a police patrol intercepted a motorcycle near Mahendranath Tilla on the Sabroom-Baishnabpur road at around 10.45 pm. The riders allegedly attempted to flee after ignoring police signals to stop but were apprehended following a chase.

During a search, police recovered 10.11 grams of heroin and 77 Yaba tablets from the motorcycle. A case was subsequently registered at Sabroom Police Station under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

After examining 10 prosecution witnesses and the evidence placed before the court, Special NDPS Judge Asit Debnath convicted both accused and awarded 10 years' rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 1 lakh each. The court also directed that they would undergo additional imprisonment in case of default in payment of the fine.

Following the pronouncement of the judgment, the two convicts were sent to Belonia Correctional Home.

Public Prosecutor Priyanka Majumdar said the conviction was secured under the relevant provisions of the NDPS Act on the basis of witness testimonies and the narcotics seized during the investigation.

The case was investigated by Sub-Inspector Arjan Chakma of Sabroom Police Station.
